Hello, hello! Today I am up on the blog sharing how I made my own pattern paper to create my take on this month’s sketch. Here is a peek at the sketch:

I am playing with just my Petite Kit to make this layout and some paints from my stash. I asked for a kit inspired by the colour black this month – I find a pop of black on a layout is sometimes just the very thing it needs, that little something to focus the eye.

For the sketch, I needed a number of small square pattern papers and as I am working with a Petite Kit I don’t have many to spare but I did receive the most amazing alpha stamp from Heidi Swapp in my kit so I thought hmm how can I use that ..

I took my big 6×6 stamping block, put all the letters and even punctuation from the stamp set in a random jumble on the block. Some letters were upright, others sideways, titled, or even upside down and no rhyme or reason as to why the J was beside the N and down from the Z. Random. Jumble. Using Staz On (Black) I stamped the entire block 4 times on a 12×12 paper.

Then using my photos as inspiration, I painted the 4 sections of the paper in greens and blues using some paints from my stash (Lindy’s Stamp Gang – Leprechaun Laurel, Emerald Eh?, Cathedral Pines Green and Time Travel Teal; and some Mr. Hueys – Heirloom Blue). Once dried, I cut the paper up into 2×2 squares which I then used to create the grid like background. .

To add my title, I stamped and fussy cut the words ALTERNATE ROUTE from the same alpha set. To secure the title to the layout I used my sewing machine with white thread and just went over it a few times (I tacked it down with some glue first to hold it in place for sewing). I also sewed some lines across the grid squares too, and at the top and bottom. I added a few splatters from the same paints I created the pattern paper with to tie it all together.

From there is was just tucking bits and adding embellishments (oh the flair in my kit this month is amazing – so I used all that I had left on this layout!) To balance the black paper from my kit that I used to mat the photos, I tore a little of the bottom and top of the layout and poked some out there too. This black paper is actually black with gold polka dots but they didn’t work for my layout – so I flipped it over and its black with embossed black dots, looks so great!

The 01, 02, 03 on the side of the photo I will use as journal prompts when I add my journaling before this one goes in the album – this was one of those days where, like happens with bad things, we had 3 bad things happen but as scrapbookers we still managed to turn it into a photo shoot!

Thanks so much for stopping by – if you get a chance to play with the sketch this month, we would love to see! Please tag us @thewildharekits on social media so we can oooh and aaah at your project.
